GHOSTS BEFORE BREAKFAST by HANS RICHTER (1928) with ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK by KIERAN HARFORD (2006)
I stumbled across this film footage while viewing the extras on a dvd called "Dreams That Money Can Buy", a film by German artist and experimental film-maker Hans Richter. The first thing that struck me about it was that it was completely silent; it seemed unfinished - the original soundtrack apparently having been destroyed by the Nazi's.
I had been searching for something to score an original soundtrack to for some time, and although this wasn't really what I was looking for, it just kind of presented itself to me, so I felt as though I couldn't turn it down.
I wanted to make it sound as un-contemporary as possible, in the hope that
it would be in keeping with the age of the film. I also used a lot of rhythm throughout the soundtrack as segments of the film seemed to suggest this. I played all the individual parts myself and multi-tracked them to give an orchestral effect. This was an arduous task which took me six weeks to complete. I haven't done another one since.
